Why women are easy targets for random acts are:

  • Lack of awareness of what is around themselves

  • Body language (should keep head up, swing arms, stand straight)

  • Wrong place at wrong time

Thing to look for when going to or standing at a car:

  • Don’t sit in the car (ex. balance check book) when a predator could be watching.

  • Be aware; look around at front seat, back seat, and the passenger side of floor.

  • If parked next to a big van get in the passenger side of the car.

  • Look and see if a male is sitting in a seat closest to your car. If so, go back and get a guard or someone to come back with you.

  • Use elevators instead of stairs.

  • Do NOT get on an elevator with someone you feel uncomfortable with.

  • Don’t feel sympathetic for someone.  Use good judgment when someone needs help. If you are alone tell them you will get help.

Tips if you get in a dangerous situation:

  • React immediately (ex. If your driving, and he is taking you to an abandoned place, crash the car at 5 mph and jump out while he is in shock.)

  • Resist going with him.  If possible, run and don’t give up.

  • Always keep distance when walking past strangers on the street or dark areas.

  • Get a cell phone for an emergency call to 911.

  • If your car breaks down, don’t stay in it.  If it is noon on a business day, you may want to put your hazards on and walk to safety. If it’s the middle of the night walk to a lighted area if possible.  If you’re on a desolate road, walk away from the car in warm clothes and go to some bushes or some other area away from your vehicle. It may be cold and uncomfortable, but at least you are not sitting as an easy target in your broken down car.

  • If you are walking alone in the dark and realize someone is following/chasing you scream “fire”.  People tend to get nosey when they hear fire; they do not pay as much attention when using “help.”

  • Crawl under a car and grab on to something as a last hope. He will not likely come under there for you (Practice this technique ahead of time.).

  • Find some kind of obstacle (ex. A parked car and run around it like ring around the rosie).

Physical defenses against a violent predator:

  • Eyes are very vulnerable; poke them hard in the eyes.

  • Griping around his neck strong enough to cut off their breathing.

  • Kick them in the knees.

  • The elbow is the strongest point on your body.  Use it if close enough.

  • If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back taillights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy.

  • If you do NOT do these things right the first time, you may be in greater trouble because it will anger the individual.  It is not that you should not attempt them, but be FORCEFUL when you do.
